Scenario
A classroom session with the teacher and year 11 students in which the careers adviser presents:

Aims of the session
To illustrate the changing face of local industry (in this case, the shift from manufacturing to service sectors).

What is local?
County or district since they are the smallest areas for which reasonably reliable hard information can be found.

Data collection

Interpretation
From the data, the adviser concludes:

At a county level there has been a huge shift away from textile manufacturing since 1929. This decline saw the growth of other kinds of manufacturing and service industries. More recently, there has been further manufacturing decline due to:

  • rationalisation
  • technology
  • increased competitiveness.

The service sector has continued to grow.

At district level the variations become apparent. The east and south rely more upon manufacturing than the business services, leisure and tourism industries, which are stronger in the western and central districts of the county.

West Somewhereshire, the Unnamed Valley and Big City show higher than average levels for other industries because of the relatively strong agricultural sector.

Presentation
The map and pie charts are presented as part of a worksheet, with the map on one side of the page and the charts on the back. Both worksheets contain questions to encourage understanding of the maps and discussion about the labour market.
