People The m-learning Project
m-Learning is a 3-year project funded by the European Commission under the Education Area of the Information Society (IST) Programme. The project will develop prototype products to provide information and modules of learning via inexpensive portable technologies which are already owned by, or readily accessible for, the majority of EU young adults. The products will seek to attract young adults aged 16-18 back to learning, with a focus on developing literacy and numeracy skills, and will assist in the development and achievement of life long learning objectives.

Space man!

Main objectives
m-Learning is motivated by the need to address three social and educational issues relating to significant numbers of young adults which have been identified as problems within the EU countries involved in the project, these are:
  • Poor literacy and numeracy (as described in Sir Claus Moser's report for the UK government "A Fresh Start: Basic Skills for Adults").
  • Unwillingness to take part in conventional education or training (as described in Helena Kennedy's report for the UK government "Learning Works")
  • Lack of access to computers leading to creation of ICT "haves" and "have nots" (as described in the UK government's Policy Action Team 15 Report "Closing the Digital Divide: Information and Communication Technology in Deprived Areas")

m-learning Project Partners
The pan-European consortium has a strong industrial focus with two organisations which are involved in developing commercial products. In addition to having special technical expertise in technologies they have a track record of developing multimedia courses for the Web and on project completion they will be in a position to exploit the outcomes of the project commercially.
